Punalu’u Black Sand Beach

On our road trip around the Big Island we happened upon Punalu’u Black Sand Beach. We were very happy about that as it was one of the places we wanted to go on the island. How often do you get to see a beach made of black sand? For us, the answer is never before.

Punalu'u Black Sand Beach

The black sand is made from basalt and flowing lava that flows into the ocean which explodes when it reaches the ocean and cools.1 I love to learn as we travel, especially when it is someplace new.

We arrived at Punalu’u at dusk and were just able to see the black sand. It was a brisk evening with the wind coming off the ocean, the waves were mesmerizing to watch.
